Baby formula shortage expected to last till Spring 2023

There have been reports of shortages of baby formula in some areas, due to a combination of factors such as increased demand during the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain disruptions, and stockpiling by consumers. Some retailers have implemented purchasing limits to try and ensure that everyone who needs formula can get it. It's important to note that these shortages are not a food safety concern and that alternative formula brands are available.

Here are 6 steps to help parents address the baby formula shortage:

  1. Check with multiple retailers: Some retailers may have more stock than others, so it's worth checking with a few different stores to see if they have the formula you need.

  2. Try alternative brands: While some specific brands may be out of stock, other brands of formula may still be available.

  3. Consider using other types of milk: If formula is not available, you may consider using other types of milk, such as cow's milk, but be aware that it's not recommended for babies under 12 months as it does not have the same nutritional value as formula. Consult with pediatrician before making any changes.

  4. Sign up for stock alerts: Some retailers may offer stock alerts, where they will notify you when specific formula brands or types become available.

  5. Consider making your own formula: If all else fails, you could consider making your own formula, but it's important to be aware that homemade formula may not have the same nutritional content as commercial formula and should be avoided if possible. Consult with pediatrician before making any changes.

  6. Be prepared for unexpected shortages: It's a good idea to keep a few extra cans of formula on hand, in case of unexpected shortages in the future.

It's important to remember that these shortages are not a food safety concern and that alternative formula brands are available. Speak to your pediatrician if you have any concerns or questions.
